For teachers, librarians, parents and carers:
Our writers of the future are our young readers and writers today. At Hunter Writers Centre we deliver a range of programs including regular after-school writing meet-ups, writing programs in schools, holiday workshop programs and specialist programs for young people (such as students with disabilities, homeschoolers, or CALD youth). Our 'Book in a Day' workshop is very popular: in one day we engage students in writing, editing then publishing a book on the web. For more information about any of our programs or tailoring one to meet your needs contact our director, Karen Crofts B.A. Dip Ed. M.C.A. Karen Crofts, Director of Hunter Writers Centre and Karen Eastwood, Projects Officer, are both qualified secondary high school teachers. Here is feedback from young writers who have completed the programs: I enjoyed learning about new ways of writing, to write from the heart and edit later. It was really helpful. I would like to do this again. Lucy I liked being able to write about anything I wanted; not a set topic. Mia I liked writing different types of stories. It was a great experience and I learnt a lot about detailing a story. Michael Thank you for organising the writing course, I really enjoyed it and it really helped me with writing in class. I would love to go to another one." Lexy I got great information from the program. I enjoyed learning how to construct a good short story. Niko I most enjoyed the 3 sentence short story exercise. The program was fun and educational. Tori It forced me to write in ways I wouldn’t usually and I liked it. Eleanor
I learnt the importance of rhythm, verbs and this will make me a better writer. Jesse It made me more confident in my writing, and has given me better techniques in developing my writing skills. Lauren I liked everything about it, especially learning about rhythm. The writing book is a great idea, I'll start. Shanais Lucy: I enjoyed the activities towards the end, the whole thing was great and I learned a lot. I would do it again any day Katherine: I liked the activities we did and the feedback we got. Tara: It was really good with all the activities and things that we can improve on. I liked the pictures we were given to base our story on. Erin: I liked how we discussed what/what not to put in our writing and the sharing Kahlee: I enjoyed just writing in general and I liked how this made me think more about what I was actually writing. Harry: I enjoyed writing without the sense of sight. It was really fun and challenging at the same time. Kristian: I liked thinking about what story we will write from the pictures and writing about my holiday without using sense of sight. Karli: Writing off the picture I really enjoyed and all of the pointers on how to write creatively. Luke: I really liked how we wrote our own narrative. I also enjoyed how we had to write something with one less sense. |
