Thinking about writing for children? Come and join us once a month for a coffee and an honest, constructive discussion about each other’s writing in an encouraging and supportive atmosphere. We aim to leave each other feeling inspired to continue to improve our writing. Manuscripts are critiqued, story plans discussed, writing competition information provided and 'pitching to publishers' is practised. A group interested in writing books for children under 12. We meet on the third Thursday of the month. This group is currently full. News from the HWC Children's Writing Group for 2015: The Children's Writing Group met every 3rd Thursday of the month throughout 2015 in the theatrette of Newcastle Region Library. We shared lots of information about the children's book industry as well and how to improve our writing. We supported each other whether we were writing for fun, entering competitions, submitting work to publishers, celebrating writing successes, or attending local children's book-related events. We've met lots of new and enthusiastic writers this year while continuing to support our regular members. We believe in maintaining an atmosphere of positive feedback mixed with honest suggestions for improvement. We are open to meeting new people who are just as enthusiastic about writing for children as us. Our achievements: Cynthia Hyde: Won an ASA mentorship program position earlier this year and is currently being mentored by Jackie French Zoe Disher: has had multiple non-fiction articled accepted for publication by 'The School Magazine' Katrina McKelvey: Released her first picture book, ‘Dandelions’, illustrated by Kirrili Lonergan and published by EK Books, on 1st October. It was launched at Newcastle Region Library on 31st October. This manuscript was critiqued by this group and the group has had the privilege of being part of its journey from first draft to finally published. From Sharon: Being a part of this writing group has gone a long way to improving my writing. It's a safe environment to get lots of helpful feedback (not always positive - but that's good too) and suggestions to make our writing better. If you are serious about writing, I suggest you be bold and find a group to join. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there, and most of all...have a go. |

Hunter Writers Centre funded the publication of the HWC poetry group's series of poems that pay tribute to Margaret Olley. Olley was an iconic figure in Australian art whose main focus on landscapes and interiors turned everyday objects and scenes into bursts of colour. As the model for one of Australia’s most recognised Archibald Prize-winning portraits by William Dobell, she looks out towards the viewer, a serene presence with a hint of mischief in her eyes. The book can be purchased from the Newcastle Art Gallery for $15.

Poetry is a solitary art, and exchanging ideas and assessments are particularly valuable at the HWC’s Poetry Group - Eve
The people at the HWC poetry group are all highly original poets with a wide collective knowledge of today’s poetry movements. I love the critical debate over each poet’s offering each month. We learn a lot and give a lot and enjoy each other’s company. What more could a poet ask? - Julie The HWC Poetry Group provides me with a warm, friendly caring environment for reading our poems and receiving positive feedback; inspiring poets who share their work; breadth of styles and topics delivered each session; opportunities to hear about poetry competitions and encouragement to enter and fun people who become friends. Alexander I enjoy the sharing of work and the members’ responses. Comments flow easily; they’re sincere, insightful and never dull. I find it so rewarding to be among like-minded people, all passionate about poetry. Kathryn I have been a member of the HWC poetry group for many years. I attend and hopefully will keep attending as I find it an excellent forum for presenting my poems and getting feedback on them. Luci Time spent with writers who share my passion for poetry is well spent. Constructive feedback never goes astray and it is interesting to gauge the reaction of others.
