Irresistible Voices - a writing class with Andy Kissane
“You mightn’t think it, but Sloppy is a beautiful speaker of a newspaper. He do the police in different voices.” — Charles Dickens, Our Mutual Friend In the best writing it is not just what is said, but how it is said that matters. This course focusses on the crucial craft of writing voice and explores strategies for finding and harnessing a voice to suit your story. A range of distinct narrative voices will be discussed and analysed. You will experiment with the creation of voices that are memorable, distinct and not your own. From colloquial to formal, naïve to sophisticated, and hyperbolic to deadpan, we will examine how voice can enliven narration and develop prose style. We will also consider the related skills of dialogue and characterisation. This course is interactive, informative and exercise-based. Come prepared to think, write and have fun. Andy Kissane is a writer of fiction and poetry. He is the 2018 judge of our Grieve writing competition for poetry. This course, however, is for prose writers. Andy has won, been shortlisted and long listed for many literary awards. You can read more about his life, works and experience here.
