2016 Newcastle Poetry Prize
This anthology features the top works selected by the judges of the 2016 Newcastle Poetry Prize - a nation wide competition for poets. John Watson, won first prize worth $15 000 for his poem 'The Dangar Island Garbage Boat' . Judge, Carol Jenkins describes the poem as possessing 'playful intelligence, a vivacity and control of form that is both buoyant and accomplished.' Second prize, awarded to Ross Gillett for his poem 'Istán and Other Places' Jenkins said 'a journey through place and a journey through time become intermeshed, and in turn paralleled by a journey in the mind through baffled emotions and estrangement'. 3rd prize: 'Lake Triptych' by Greg McLaren Commendeds: Caitlin Maling 'February in Oregon' & Paul Hetherington 'Blanche and Henry' Local Award: Judy Johnson - 'Black Convicts (in Thirteen Syllables) Harri Jones Memorial Prize (for a poet <35 years): Katie Mills - 'Curios' HWC Award: Anne Walsh - 'Wolves In the Cathedral' |
